10 Tips for avoiding Business disputes In 2017

A new year is an opportunity for a bit of early spring cleaning as well as setting some new rules.  Here are our tips for a dispute free 2017:

  1. Minute meetings and circulate quickly to give everyone an opportunity to challenge any misunderstandings while all the details are fresh in their minds
  2. If you say something in the heat of the moment you subsequently regret, apologise no matter how embarrassing the situation before it has time to fester
  3. If you are unhappy with staff or contractor performance raise your concerns right away to avoid misunderstandings or further deterioration
  4. Review and update long term contracts to reflect current situation
  5. Pay any outstanding bills or contact your creditor to explain why payment is delayed
  6. Put in place written contracts between your business partners if there are any missing
  7. Conduct an intellectual property audit to ensure you have all the rights you need to run your business
  8. Check the files of any projects that seem to have stalled to identify the hold up and consider what might be done to unblock the problem.
  9. If you are in a dispute with someone already or if discussions have reached an impasse be the one who reaches out to suggest a meeting or a fresh approach to the problem – don’t forget the option of engaging a mediator or facilitator
  10. Arrange to meet with collaborators regularly throughout your contracts to ensure you all know how each piece is progressing so that there are no nasty surprises
